Tezcatl
Aztec practice of gazing into a polished obsidian mirror in dim light — a documented Ganzfeld effect that starves the visual cortex of input and forces it to generate its own imagery.

Identification
Tezcatl (Nahuatl, "obsidian mirror") names the scrying practice central to the cult of Tezcatlipoca ("Smoking Mirror"), the supreme Aztec deity of night, sorcery, ancestral memory, and conflict, whose principal attribute was the obsidian mirror. Obsidian mirrors in Mesoamerica trace back to the Olmec period (roughly 1500–400 BCE), though the Tezcatlipoca cult specifically flowered in the Postclassical period (10th–16th centuries); one surviving mirror, in John Dee's 16th-century collection, has been geochemically confirmed as originating from the Pachuca obsidian quarries in Mexico. Bernardino de Sahagún's Florentine Codex (16th century) describes rituals performed with these mirrors, and the practice's underlying mechanism — the Ganzfeld effect — was first formally described by Wolfgang Metzger in 1930.
Context
Practiced in a dark or dimly lit room, typically at night, by a single candle or oil lamp, using a polished obsidian mirror or any comparably dark, uniform reflective surface — historically within a temple or priestly setting. Access in the Aztec tradition belonged to priests and seers specifically; the practice is fully open today, and the underlying Ganzfeld effect has been studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Prerequisites include the capacity to sustain a fixed gaze for ten to thirty minutes and a dimly lit environment; in the traditional context, priestly initiation and ritual purification were required. The traditional aim treated the obsidian mirror as a portal between worlds: Tezcatlipoca gazes through it into the souls of people and reveals hidden truths, and priests used it to obtain prophecy, diagnose illness, and communicate with ancestral spirits. In mechanical terms, sustained gazing into a uniform dark surface deprives the visual cortex of differentiated input, and the brain compensates for this deficit by amplifying internal neural noise and interpreting it as meaningful imagery.
MECHANISM
How the tradition explains it
The obsidian mirror is the eye of the god Tezcatlipoca. It reflects not the external world but truth — a reality ordinarily hidden from sight. The priest, gazing into the mirror, opens a portal between worlds, and the images that arise within it are messages from gods and spirits, not products of the mind.
What the science says
The Ganzfeld effect (Metzger, 1930; Wackermann et al., 2008) describes how the visual cortex, receiving a uniform, undifferentiated input, amplifies its own internal neural noise, which higher visual processing areas then interpret as structured imagery; fMRI studies find reduced connectivity between the thalamus and primary visual cortex under Ganzfeld conditions, weakening bottom-up sensory processing while top-down interpretive processing continues, plausibly causing noise to be read as genuine signal. Caputo's "strange-face illusion" experiments (2010) found that gazing into a mirror in dim light produced strong facial distortions for 66 percent of participants and unfamiliar faces for 28 percent, a result attributed to neural adaptation, Troxler fading, and hyperactivity in the fusiform face area, the brain's face-recognition system, misreading ambiguous input. The dark environment itself reduces the total stream of incoming visual data, weakening thalamic gating of the cortex, and the cortex, active without a genuine external input to process, generates hallucinatory content in a manner comparable to Charles Bonnet syndrome; Troxler's original 1804 observation — that a steadily fixated peripheral stimulus fades from awareness — compounds this by creating an ambiguous, fog-like margin around the point of fixation.
VARIATIONS
The classical Aztec obsidian mirror uses a dark, largely non-reflective polished surface within a ritual context. The European crystal ball tradition substitutes a transparent or translucent sphere, relying on the same defocusing and uniform-field mechanism. Hydromancy, gazing into dark water in a bowl or well, is among the oldest forms, with minimal reflection and a gently shifting surface. Raymond Moody's modern psychomanteum adapts the practice in a darkened room with an angled mirror and a dim candle, used therapeutically for grief processing rather than literal communication with the dead. Caputo's laboratory protocol — an ordinary mirror plus dim light — is the minimal setup for reproducing the effect.
RISKS & LIMITS
Traditional sources warn that "the mirror shows what is hidden, including what is better left unseen," and caution that an unprepared practitioner can become "seized" by the visions. From the science: the emergence of frightening imagery (monstrous faces, reported by 48 percent of participants in Caputo's studies) can heighten anxiety, and dissociative states can occur during extended sessions; in people with schizophrenia or schizotypal traits, the intensity of the illusions rises substantially, with a documented risk of provoking a psychotic episode (Caputo et al., 2012). Schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, severe dissociative disorders, depersonalization disorder, photosensitive epilepsy, and PTSD with high trigger sensitivity are contraindications.
MARKERS
Correct execution produces, after five to ten minutes, a felt sense of the mirror's surface "melting" or "breathing," fading peripheral vision, and a spreading fog-like quality; after ten to twenty minutes, stable visual imagery — faces, figures, geometric patterns — in a calm, observational state free of anxiety. Eye strain from attempting to focus sharply, rising anxiety as distortions appear, an inability to relax the gaze, and a total absence of any effect after twenty minutes all mark incorrect execution, usually from lighting that is too bright or excessive analytical control.
