Labyrinth walking names the cross-cultural practice of slowly walking a single winding path (unicursal, with no branching or dead ends) to a labyrinth's center and back as a form of meditation. Labyrinth designs trace to Minoan Crete (roughly 2000 BCE) and appear in Bronze Age Scandinavian stone labyrinths, but the specific unicursal, meditative walking form most widely practiced today derives from medieval cathedral labyrinths, above all the eleven-circuit labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral (roughly 1200 CE); its modern revival as a meditative practice dates to 1991, led by Dr. Lauren Artress and the organization Veriditas. Practiced on any labyrinth path — painted on a cathedral floor as at Chartres, laid out in stones on a Scandinavian shoreline, cut into turf in England, drawn in chalk, woven into portable canvas, or, for those with limited mobility, traced with a finger on a miniature "finger labyrinth." Access is fully open, requiring no special preparation, and labyrinths are found in parks, cathedrals, hospitals, and educational centers worldwide. The traditional medieval Christian aim was a symbolic pilgrimage to Jerusalem for those unable to make the journey in person, structured in three phases: purgation (the walk inward), illumination (arrival at the center), and union (the walk back out, returning to the world transformed). In mechanical terms, the labyrinth's unicursal structure — a single path with no decisions to make — frees the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus from navigational planning, while its continuous gentle 180-degree turns stimulate the vestibular system, producing a calming effect comparable to the soothing sensation of gentle rocking.

Life winds like the labyrinth's path: it seems to bring you closer to your goal, then suddenly turns away — but unlike a maze, with its dead ends, a sacred labyrinth has only one path, and trusting it always leads to the center. The center is the meeting with God, or with oneself; the walk back out is a return to the world carrying renewed understanding.

Unlike a true maze, which requires ongoing navigational decisions and engages the hippocampus and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for spatial planning, a unicursal labyrinth requires no decisions at all, letting these regions rest and reducing beta-band activity associated with anxious, hypervigilant thinking. The Chartres labyrinth's twenty-eight 180-degree turns provide continuous, gentle stimulation of the vestibular system — the inner ear's semicircular canals — which, via the cerebellum, brainstem, and vagus nerve, raises parasympathetic tone in a manner comparable to the calming effect of being gently rocked (Porges, 2011). RISKS & LIMITS
None are documented within the tradition, where the labyrinth is regarded as an inherently "safe path" with no dead ends. From the science: physical risks are minimal — tripping, or mild dizziness in especially vestibular-sensitive individuals — and psychological risk is minimal, though suppressed emotional material can theoretically surface unexpectedly in the open, receptive state the walk induces, a rare occurrence. Pronounced vestibular disorders (vertigo) and severe mobility impairment are contraindications for the full-size walking form, for which the finger labyrinth is a suitable alternative.
