Trul khor (འབྡུལ་འཁོར, "magic wheel/mechanism"), also known as Yantra Yoga, names a system of movement, breath retention, and visualization within the Bön (Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyud lineage) and Vajrayana Dzogchen traditions, the latter's core text attributed to the 8th-century master Vairocana. It formalized within Tibetan practice by roughly the 8th to 10th century CE.

Context

Practiced in monastic retreats, hermit caves, and high-altitude open air, traditionally at dawn on an empty stomach. Historically restricted to those who had received formal transmission from a qualified teacher and completed preliminary practices; contemporary teachers have opened access more broadly. Prerequisites include a confident breath retention of 20 to 30 seconds under load, physical conditioning for dynamic movement, and familiarity with the subtle-body map used to direct attention. The traditional aim is clearing blockages from the body's channels, directing the vital "wind" into the central channel, and preparing body and mind for the higher practices of Dzogchen. In mechanical terms, the aim is generating a controlled physiological stress cycle — breath retention plus load driving hypoxia and sympathetic activation — followed by an abrupt switch into parasympathetic release, producing a neurochemical surge and mechanical release of chronic muscular holding.

How the tradition explains it

The "wind" that moves the mind becomes blocked in the channels, clouding awareness and tensing the body. Trul khor forces the channels open: retained breath builds pressure, movement clears blockages, and the explosive exhale expels contaminated wind, letting the mind become clear.

What the science says

Breath retention under physical load produces transient hypoxia and hypercapnia, activating the sympathetic nervous system via carotid body chemoreceptors — a controlled stress state (Selye's "eustress"). The explosive exhale that follows triggers immediate reoxygenation and CO2-dependent cerebral vasodilation, sharply increasing cerebral blood flow; the accompanying surge of β-endorphin and dopamine produces a brief euphoria and felt clarity, paralleling effects documented in Wim Hof-style breathing protocols (Kox et al., 2014). Wilhelm Reich's concept of "muscular armoring" finds a partial anatomical basis in documented sensory receptors within fascia (Schleip, 2003); the combination of internal pressure, mechanical deformation, and abrupt release may release these holding patterns, at times producing genuine emotional catharsis. Tummo ("inner fire") is a related practice focused on generating internal heat through visualization and breath retention; Tsa Lung is Trul Khor's purely internal counterpart, working breath and visualization alone without physical movement.

RISKS & LIMITS

Traditional sources warn of "wind disorder" from incorrect practice — anxiety, insomnia, tachycardia, panic — and categorically warn against practicing without a qualified teacher. From the science: syncope from hypoxia combined with a Valsalva maneuver, pulmonary barotrauma, stroke risk when retention is combined with inversions, cardiac arrhythmia, musculoskeletal injury from vigorous movement without warm-up, and uncontrolled emotional catharsis are documented risks. Untreated hypertension, cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, pregnancy, glaucoma, hernias, and psychotic conditions are contraindications.
