Identification
Liu Zi Jue ("the six-character formula"), known in English as the Six Healing Sounds, names a Taoist internal-alchemy and Traditional Chinese Medicine qigong system pairing six vocalized exhalation sounds with attention directed to specific internal organs. It is first documented by the Taoist physician Tao Hongjing (456–536 CE) in his Yangsheng Yanling Lu, roughly 1,500 years old, later adapted by the Buddhist monk Zhiyi and standardized in its modern clinical form by the Chinese Health Qigong Association in 2003.
Context
Practiced in a quiet, well-ventilated space, standing or seated at the edge of a chair with an upright spine. Fully open, a standard medical qigong technique. Prerequisites are basic diaphragmatic breathing and a working knowledge of the location of the internal organs the practice addresses. The traditional aim is regulating the movement of qi through the internal organs: in Traditional Chinese Medicine, illness and emotional blockage arise from stagnant or excessive "heat" in the organs, and the six sounds, through specific vibration, expel this turbid qi and replace it with fresh qi on the inhale, transmuting each associated negative emotion into its corresponding virtue. In mechanical terms, the aim is activating the parasympathetic "rest and digest" system through vagus nerve stimulation via a prolonged vocalized exhale, combined with a localized vibrational massage of the fascial sheaths surrounding each organ to release stress-held micro-spasm.

How the tradition explains it
Negative emotions are an excess of heat that becomes trapped in the internal organs — anger strikes the liver, fear strikes the kidneys. Shaping the lips and throat to produce the correct sound generates a vibration that resonates with the meridian and tissue of that specific organ, mechanically shaking loose the stagnant qi, which the exhale then carries out of the body.
What the science says
Prolonging an exhale while shaping it into a sustained sound, with resistance from the lips, directly stimulates afferent fibers of the vagus nerve innervating the larynx, pharynx, and diaphragm; this activates the parasympathetic system, documented to lower heart rate and blood pressure and suppress cortisol. Porges's polyvagal theory identifies vocalization as an evolved mechanism for regulating physiological state through the "social engagement system." Differences in lip and throat shaping across the six sounds produce distinct acoustic formants; though a whispered sound carries little volume externally, the vibration transmits through bone and the fascial network directly into the chest and abdominal cavities, with documented micro-vibration effects on smooth-muscle relaxation and visceral microcirculation. Emotions are embodied: anger clenches the jaw and diaphragm, fear spasms the lower back and pelvic floor; directing interoceptive attention to the tense zone while visualizing the emotion as "smoke" leaving on the exhale is a documented form of cognitive reframing paired with a motor action. The accompanying arm movements separately place mechanical tension on the fascia of the targeted organ, with the following exhale and lowering of the arms producing a fascial release response in that same location.
VARIATIONS
The standardized Chinese Health Qigong Association complex (2003), emphasizing whole-body movement paired with each sound, is considered the safest and most physiologically grounded version for fitness and rehabilitation. Mantak Chia's internal-alchemy lineage uses less physical movement and greater emphasis on color visualization and transforming specific emotions, often performed seated. An advanced, purely sub-vocal practice produces no audible sound at all — only the articulation and exhale — held to conserve qi by preserving the internal vibrational massage without losing energy externally.
RISKS & LIMITS
Traditional sources warn that shouting the sounds too loudly depletes the qi of the throat and heart, and that forcing the breath's phases can produce dizziness. From the science: hyperventilation can lower blood CO2 and cause dizziness or vascular spasm, and excessive focus on organ-level psychosomatics can heighten anxiety in hypochondriac-prone individuals. Acute abdominal inflammatory conditions, pulmonary hemorrhage, asthma in an active flare, and pronounced hypotension are contraindications.
MARKERS
Correct execution produces a felt warmth, vibration, or "dissolving of tension" in the target organ's zone, a lowered heart rate, warm hands and feet, yawning, spontaneous deep sighs, audible stomach rumbling, and a subjective sense of relief with the targeted emotion objectively felt as weaker afterward. Dizziness from hyperventilation, a sore or scraped throat from shouting rather than sub-vocalizing, rising rather than falling anxiety, and chest tightness all mark incorrect execution.
