Identification

Sama vritti (Sanskrit सम वृत्ति, "equal fluctuation" or "even wave") names the classical pranayama technique of equalizing the duration of each phase of the breath, referenced in commentary on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (chapter 2, sutra 50) and further elaborated in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Its documented history runs more than two thousand years, to the compilation of the Yoga Sutras themselves (roughly 4th–2nd century BCE).

Context

Practiced in yoga classes and personal sadhana, typically as an entry point into deeper meditation and, historically, as preparation for kumbhaka, extended breath retention. Access is fully open and the technique was traditionally taught to beginners before more advanced pranayama forms. The only prerequisite is the ability to sit upright comfortably. The traditional aim is balancing the two primary energy channels (ida and pingala) and calming citta vritti, the fluctuations of the mind, through rhythm. In mechanical terms, breathing to a fixed external or mental count functions as a heart-rate-variability biofeedback technique, building coherence between heart rhythm and breath and shifting the nervous system away from sympathetic activation and toward parasympathetic "rest and digest" function.

How the tradition explains it

When the breath wanders, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika holds, the mind wanders with it; but when the breath is stilled, the mind stills as well. Rhythm brings order to the mind's chaos.

What the science says

Slow, rhythmic breathing, particularly near six breaths per minute, maximizes respiratory sinus arrhythmia — the natural coupling of heart rate to the breathing cycle — producing measurable heart-rate-variability coherence between cardiac and respiratory rhythms. Exhalation specifically engages the vagus nerve, slowing heart rate through parasympathetic braking, and the requirement to count or track a rhythm occupies working memory and prefrontal attention, displacing anxious rumination in the process. Breath retention additionally alters blood gas composition in a mild, controlled way, building tolerance to elevated CO2 — a documented pathway to a subjectively calmer, steadier state. The underlying principle is entrainment: an externally imposed, strict rhythm synchronizes multiple biological oscillators — heart, brainstem, lungs — into a single coherent pattern.

VARIATIONS

Box breathing (four seconds in, four held, four out, four held) is the most widely known modern form, popularized by U.S. Navy SEALs as a rapid-stabilization technique under stress. Visama vritti ("uneven wave") uses deliberately unequal ratios, such as 1:2:4:2, for a more advanced practice. A mantra-paced variant substitutes a repeated syllable such as "Om" for numerical counting, one repetition per phase.

RISKS & LIMITS

Traditional sources warn that pranayama practiced forcefully, without patience, "kills the practitioner as a lion kills its tamer." From the science: excessively long breath holds can cause dizziness or fainting through mild hypoxia, and people prone to panic attacks can occasionally experience a paradoxical rise in anxiety — air hunger — when attention is fixed on breath holds specifically. Pregnancy, hypertension, and COPD are relative contraindications for the breath-hold variants. The most common failure point is losing count, tensing the throat or shoulders, or attempting an interval that is too long (eight to ten seconds) before building up to it gradually.

MARKERS

Correct execution produces breathing that becomes quiet and fine, a mind that settles enough for the counting to run on its own without conscious effort, and a felt sense of steady, unshakeable calm.
