Identification
Lung-gom-pa ("meditation on the wind, or vital energy") names a documented but never independently verified Tibetan technique of covering extreme distances on foot while in deep trance, associated with esoteric Kagyu and Bon lineages, and traditionally linked to the yogic lineage of the eleventh-to-twelfth-century master Milarepa. Its account in the West rests almost entirely on the eyewitness testimony of the explorer Alexandra David-Néel, recorded in her 1929 book Magic and Mystery in Tibet; no independent scientific or historical confirmation of the phenomenon exists beyond this and comparable oral accounts.
Context
Practiced on the high plateaus of Tibet. Access was extremely restricted, requiring years of prior preparation in isolation. Prerequisites reportedly included solitary retreat lasting from several months to three years, mastery of pranayama, the capacity to recite mantras continuously for days, and vows of silence. The traditional aim was rapid travel between distant monasteries to carry sacred texts or messages, and the physical demonstration of spiritual realization and mastery over the subtle winds (lung) in the body's channels — the wind itself, in this understanding, carrying the body forward. In mechanical terms, the technique is described as combining sensory monotony (mantra, rhythm, a fixed unfocused gaze) with a cognitive conviction of bodily weightlessness to override the brain's protective fatigue-signaling mechanism.

How the tradition explains it
The practitioner accumulates internal wind (lung), rendering the body weightless. In deep trance, it is not the person who runs but a deity or spirit temporarily possessing the body, and so fatigue is not felt.

Sustained, extreme focus on a distant fixed point combined with a rhythmic gait and mantra is described as inducing a flow state, associated with reduced prefrontal cortex activity — Arne Dietrich's transient hypofrontality — which would plausibly disengage ordinary reflective self-monitoring and the perception of elapsed time. Tim Noakes's central governor theory holds that the brain issues fatigue signals well before the muscles are genuinely exhausted, as a protective mechanism, and a sufficiently deep trance combined with monotonous sensory input may plausibly override this protective signaling, allowing access to physiological reserves ordinarily withheld — with the subjective rating of perceived exertion falling toward zero. Biomechanically, the described "spring-mass" running pattern — a wide, level, pendulum-like stride landing on the forefoot, minimizing vertical oscillation — is consistent with maximizing elastic energy return from the Achilles tendon and other lower-limb tendons, improving running economy, and repeated high-altitude training in the Himalayas would plausibly produce genuine metabolic adaptation to low oxygen availability. A further, more tentative mechanism holds that prolonged trance running triggers substantial endogenous opioid and endocannabinoid release, suppressing pain perception over extended duration.
VARIATIONS
No significant variations of the technique itself are documented; the tradition survives only as scattered, largely unverifiable accounts, with the specific methods of different lineages lost or deliberately withheld. A structurally comparable but distinct practice exists among Japanese marathon monks (kaihogyo, on Mount Hiei), though that tradition is built around ascetic endurance and overcoming pain directly rather than a light, weightless trance state.
RISKS & LIMITS
This is an extreme, essentially unverifiable historical account, not a practice for reproduction. Traditional sources describe death from an abrupt, premature exit from the trance state before a ritual cooldown could be completed. From the science: acute depletion of metabolic reserves, rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure, stress fractures, and cardiac arrest from overriding the nervous system's own warning signals of a critical physiological state are documented risks of any attempt to override the body's central fatigue-limiting mechanisms over extreme distances. Cardiovascular disease and an unconditioned musculoskeletal system are contraindications.
