Identification
Kapu kuialua, commonly called lua, names the martial art of Native Hawaiian warriors (koa), transmitted orally within closed royal (ali'i) lineages, its precise age unrecorded but predating European contact in 1778. First-hand accounts of the tradition come primarily from early missionaries and explorers in Polynesia, alongside the closed oral lineages that preserved it.
Context
Practiced on battlefields and in secret nighttime training in forest ritual sites (heiau) or ocean surf. Access was strictly elite: only chiefs, members of the royal family, and professional warriors were trained, and teaching commoners or demonstrating techniques to the uninitiated was punishable by death — the source of the name kapu, "forbidden." Prerequisites included exceptional physical strength and endurance, skill in hula dance for balance, and deep personal loyalty. The traditional aim was the swift, effective destruction of an enemy in close combat, protection of the chief, and the accumulation and preservation of mana, spiritual power. In mechanical terms, the practice builds absolute biomechanical competence — an ordinary person is unaware of their skeleton's true structural limits, which breeds a subconscious fear of injury, while a lua warrior, having exhaustively studied exactly how much force breaks a given joint, paradoxically loses fear for their own structural integrity, in a form of cognitive-somatic exposure in which extreme aggression is matched by extreme competence.
MECHANISM
How the tradition explains it
Knowledge of the body's structure and control over the flow of mana lets a warrior instantly take an enemy's life or restore a comrade's. One cannot break what one does not know how to heal — the reason lua's martial knowledge remains bound to lomilomi, the Hawaiian healing arts.

The practice rests on an exhaustive empirical knowledge of applied anatomy — osteology and neurology — that plausibly restructures the brain's body schema, its internal neural map of the body's structure and capacities. An ordinary person does not consciously register the structural limits of their own skeleton, and this ignorance plausibly underlies an implicit fear of structural failure; a lua practitioner, having thoroughly mapped precisely how much force is required to break a specific joint, may lose this fear precisely because the threat has become fully known and specified rather than vague — a pattern consistent with cognitive-behavioral exposure therapy, in which extreme, controlled competence displaces an unspecified, generalized fear. Nighttime training, conducted in darkness, plausibly drives somatosensory cortex plasticity by forcing the brain to rely on proprioception rather than vision, sharpening the speed of tactile reaction in close combat. The restorative practice of lomilomi, deep-tissue massage, separately accelerates lymphatic drainage, provides myofascial release, and repositions displaced tissue structures.
VARIATIONS
The combat form of lua centers maximum damage — fractures, joint dislocation, strikes to nerve centers. The healing form, lomilomi (paired with ho'oponopono), applies the identical anatomical knowledge in reverse, used by healers (kahuna) to set joints, release muscular trauma after combat, and restore bodily harmony.
RISKS & LIMITS
This is a historically documented, extreme martial tradition, not a practice for casual reproduction. Traditional sources describe training injuries and the death of opponents as expected outcomes; in earlier eras, revealing the art's secrets was itself punishable by death. From the science: severe joint injury, ligament tears, fractures, and nerve compression are documented risks of careless practice, alongside the risk of the practice fostering destructive behavior outside a controlled setting. Osteoporosis, joint instability, the absence of qualified supervision, and impulse-control disorders are contraindications.
