Dadirri (Deep Listening)
Aboriginal Australian practice of unfocused, open listening to the natural soundscape, quieting the mind through auditory open monitoring.

Identification
Dadirri — from the Ngan’gikurunggurr and Ngen’giwumirri languages of the Daly River region, Northern Territory — translates roughly as ‘deep, inner listening and quiet, still awareness.’ As a daily practice it is inseparable from a continuous Aboriginal Australian culture stretching back an estimated 65,000 years; as an articulated concept offered to a Western audience, it dates to 1988, when Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann (b. c. 1950), a Daly River elder, artist, and educator, first described it publicly as a gift her people wished to share. She founded the Miriam Rose Foundation and was named Senior Australian of the Year in 2021. Judy Atkinson’s Trauma Trails (2002) documents its contemporary use in healing work.
Context
Seated on the ground, ideally near a river, lake, or in the bush — on one’s own Country, where the specific sounds are known and meaningful — though the practice adapts, with some loss of depth, to any reasonably quiet natural setting. Access is genuinely open: Ungunmerr deliberately shared Dadirri with the world, stating explicitly that it is ‘for everyone,’ with no initiation or restriction; attribution matters nonetheless — the concept and its origin should be credited. Prerequisites are minimal: ordinary hearing and the willingness to sit still for 20-plus minutes with nothing to do. The stated aim, in Ungunmerr’s own words, is to hear ‘the deep spring inside us’ and the voice of Country, to slow to the pace of the land rather than to achieve a specific state — closer to a posture of patient presence than to a goal-directed meditation.
MECHANISM
How the tradition explains it
‘You sit on the ground, and you wait, and you listen. Our people have learned to wait. We don’t rush. We listen, and the silence fills us.’ Country — the land — is alive and aware; it holds law and knowledge; sitting quietly and listening reconnects a person, separated by the noise of modern life, back to the land, to the self, and to the silence within.
What the science says
Dadirri is, mechanically, auditory open-monitoring meditation. Lutz et al. (2008) describe open monitoring as attention distributed across an entire field of experience rather than fixed on one object — here, the entire natural soundscape at once, so the prefrontal cortex makes no executive selection of what to attend to, and both PFC and default-mode network activity measurably decline. Brewer et al. (2011) showed reduced DMN activity in experienced meditators generally; here, the continuous, unstructured soundstream occupies auditory cortex fully enough that rumination has nowhere to run. Natural sounds specifically raise parasympathetic tone — Ratcliffe et al. (2013) found nature sounds lower heart rate and skin conductance, while Gould van Praag et al. (2017) found they reduce DMN-related prefrontal activity more effectively than silence, plausibly because the fractal (1/f) statistical structure of natural sound is ‘predictably unpredictable,’ letting the brain’s predictive machinery settle rather than continually search for pattern. Seeley et al.’s salience-network model (2007) describes a third possible mode beyond task-focus and mind-wandering: passive monitoring, in which nothing specific is flagged as important, cognitive load drops, and a state of relaxed alertness results — the closest technical description of the reported experience.
VARIATIONS
Dadirri by a river — the version most closely associated with Ungunmerr’s own Daly River country — is the most fully documented form; moving water provides an especially effective natural fractal soundscape. Dadirri in bush or forest substitutes wind, birdsong, and insect sound for water, with a somewhat different but comparably effective frequency profile. A city-park adaptation is possible but measurably weaker: traffic and voices raise sympathetic rather than parasympathetic tone, so a genuinely quiet park works, a busy one does not; recorded nature sound through headphones engages the same auditory open-monitoring mechanism but lacks the full sensory and cultural depth of the original.
RISKS & LIMITS
From the tradition: impatience is the most commonly named obstacle — Ungunmerr observed that Western practitioners often expect a quick result, but Dadirri offers no result beyond the practice itself. Using the term without acknowledging its Aboriginal origin is a real and named form of cultural appropriation. From the science: this is among the safest practices in the entire register — no altered states, no physical strain. In people with severe anxiety, unstructured stillness can occasionally amplify rumination if the surrounding soundscape is too sparse; starting in a richer, more sound-filled natural setting rather than near-silence addresses this. No absolute contraindications are documented.
MARKERS
Correct execution: thoughts grow quiet without falling asleep — alpha-dominant, relaxed wakefulness. Noticing sounds that had gone unnoticed before, evidence the auditory range has genuinely widened. The body relaxing on its own, without deliberate effort. A felt sense of belonging to the place rather than observing it from outside. Failure markers: falling asleep (sit with a straighter spine); analyzing or naming sounds as they occur, which re-engages the prefrontal cortex and turns open monitoring back into a focused, analytic task — the instruction is simply to listen, not to identify; irritation at the surrounding sound (the setting is a poor match — find a different place).
