Identification

Bhramari pranayama (Sanskrit भ्रामरी प्राणायाम, "bee breath," from bhramara, the black Indian bee, named for its characteristic humming sound) is described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Svatmarama, 15th century, 2:68) — "inhale swiftly making the sound of a bee, and exhale slowly making the soft sound of a bee; by this practice the yogi becomes lord among yogis, and the mind dissolves into bliss" — and further in the Gheranda Samhita. Its documented history runs at least to the fifteenth century, with oral tradition plausibly older.

Context

Practiced in any quiet space, seated, eyes closed, with the ears optionally covered by the fingers (Shanmukhi Mudra) to intensify the internalized sound. Access is fully open — among the simplest of pranayamas, learnable in minutes. The only prerequisite is the ability to close the mouth and produce a sustained humming tone. The traditional aim is dissolving the mind into bliss (ananda) through inner sound (nada); Bhramari is one of the core techniques for cultivating nadanusandhana, meditation on the inner sound, with the bee's hum understood as an echo of the cosmic vibrating sound. In mechanical terms, the humming creates oscillating air pressure within the paranasal sinuses, sharply increasing local nitric oxide release, while the vibration itself, transmitted through the skull's bones, directly stimulates the vagus nerve and hypothalamus.

MECHANISM

How the tradition explains it

The sound "mmm" is a manifestation of nada, the cosmic vibration, within. By closing the outer senses (Shanmukhi Mudra), the yogi redirects attention inward and hears "sound behind sound," a path leading toward self-realization. Bhramari is a gateway to anahata nada, the unstruck, unborn sound.

What the science says

Weitzberg and Lundberg (2002, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine) found that humming raises nasal nitric oxide roughly fifteenfold compared with quiet exhalation — from approximately 150 to 2,250 parts per billion — since the paranasal sinuses continuously produce nitric oxide via inducible nitric oxide synthase, and the oscillating air pressure created by humming dramatically increases gas exchange between the sinuses and the nasal cavity. Nitric oxide reaching the lungs on the inhaled breath acts as a pulmonary vasodilator, improving the match between ventilation and perfusion and raising blood oxygenation, and systemically functions as a potent vasodilator, neurotransmitter, and antimicrobial agent — a role recognized by the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, awarded to Furchgott, Ignarro, and Murad for discovering nitric oxide's signaling functions. Separately, the skull's bone conduction of the humming vibration transmits directly to the brainstem, plausibly stimulating branches of the trigeminal and vagus nerves and triggering reflexive parasympathetic activation, while the sharply lengthened exhale that humming requires independently favors the parasympathetic phase of the breathing cycle.

VARIATIONS

The basic form hums on the exhale with no accompanying mudra. The classical form adds Shanmukhi Mudra, closing the ears (and sometimes all the sense gates) to internalize the sound fully. A variant incorporating Khechari Mudra, the tongue curled back toward the palate, intensifies resonance in the sphenoid sinuses. Varying the pitch of the hum shifts the resonance — a higher tone toward the frontal sinuses, a lower tone toward the chest — producing correspondingly different felt effects.

RISKS & LIMITS

None are documented within the tradition, where Bhramari is regarded as one of the safest pranayamas. From the science: mild dizziness can occur with overly forceful humming from hyperventilation, and Shanmukhi Mudra can cause discomfort or a theoretical rise in ear pressure in people with active ear infections. Acute otitis media (when using the mudra) and severe epilepsy (given the vibrational brain stimulation, a theoretical risk) are documented contraindications.

MARKERS

Correct execution produces a felt vibration in the face, forehead, and crown of the head — a sign of genuine skull resonance — a sense of the nasal passages clearing, a slowing pulse, immediate relaxation within three to five cycles, and a felt warmth in the face. Vibration confined to the throat alone, throat tension, dizziness, and the absence of any relaxing effect all mark incorrect execution.
